Topics for boys?
We are busy at work on Book 7! But we need some high interest, comtemporary topics of interest to teen boys. Do you have ideas for us??
So far we have the following suggestions gathered at a training in Miami last week:
- Thug mentality
- Sport shoes, a la Jordans.
- Music production as a career: Swiss Beatz and Drake
What are your male students talking about? What topics would interest them?
Post your suggestions below! Maybe you will find articles on those topics in Book 7 or 8!

Are the comprehension questions in PWImpact! standards-based?
YES! Each question is tied to a specific standard and the pattern is consistent throughout each PWImpact! unit.
For example, in the Technical Extensions.....
Questions 1 and 2 are always vocabulary questions.
Question 3 requires students to draw conclusions.
Question 4 asks students to identify relevant details.
Question 5 requires students to identify patterns of organization.
Question 6 allows students to determine the main idea of the reading.
Question 7 identifies cause and effect relationships.
Question 8 has students A***yze the text to find similar/dissimilar elements and compare/contrast.
Question 9 asks students to check the validity and accuracy of information.
Question 10 requires students to apply evaluative criteria and summarize.
Question 11 takes students to the highest level of thinking where they synthesize information to draw conclusions.
Question 12 is a short answer question that incorporates one or more of the above standards.

How is the PWImpact! material being used?
The students really enjoy the articles, and I have been able to do a range of activities with the passages. We are using Impact Book 2 for Grades 11-12 Reading classes as supplemental texts for the class. We generally devote an entire quarter to the text. |

How do you feel about discussing ethical issues with your students??
We must adopt some basic guidelines in leading ethical discussions with our students:
- In general, it is important to lead the discussion as an impartial participant, without imposing our personal viewpoints on our students. If we express our own opinions, students may infer that their views are “wrong.” This will shut down future input from some of those students.
- It will be difficult, if not impossible or desirable, to reach any consensus during these discussions.
- Many teens have views that can be described as “countercultural.” This is a normal stage of reaching maturity, although the views will often be disturbing to hear. It is best not to react negatively to these statements; merely accept input as food for thought.
Many teachers may ask what we hope to achieve by leading such discussions if we are not going to tell our students what is “right.”
We are teaching our young people how to think and how to make sound decisions. And we are doing it in a setting that is non-judgmental and safe in which to explore difficult issues, with a responsible adult to facilitate the conversation.
Need more help with this? We have a Professional Development component available on our web portal!

What are your students talking about??
I have some ideas for upcoming Impact books.
1. "extreme" sports entered in the Olympics (snowboarding, etc) or the process by which certain sports are accepted in the Olympics- such as, is there a movement to get skateboarding or surfing in the upcoming games?
2. Children's beauty pageants! There are numerous shows on TV now and a lot of discussion as to whether or not these pageants harm girl's self esteem
3. How life is for bands on the road touring
4. The pros and cons of a vegetarian lifestyle (a lot of kids experiment with this in high school)
5. pros and cons for uniforms in public schools
6. What about unusual scholarships available to students who are applying to college?
7. The earthquake in Haiti and perhaps from the perspective of a Haitian teenager |
